Faculty Report

First

The first graders spent time second trimester researching and writing animal reports. They used books to find non-fiction text features and Pebble Go to find their information. In math, the students are learning to add and subtract two digit numbers. They are really enjoying applying this new skill!

Second

Second Grade just finished up with our Life Science unit with our giant habitat murals that have been decorating the main hallway. We will be moving on to Matter with some fun experiments with Ooblech, legos and ice pops. In Social Studies we have been learning about schools long ago and today. We will be sending home information soon regarding our field trip on April 27th to the Morton Arboretum to learn about animal homes and have some fun in the children's garden.

Third

Third grade is learning about nonfiction narratives. They are reading and listening to a selection of books. They are also learning how to share information using Google Slides

Fourth

Fourth Graders have been doing research in preparation for drafting a Feature Article. Students have chosen a wide variety of topics from sports, to animals to role models, etc.

In Social Studies, students investigated the myth of Mrs. O’Leary Cow starting the Great Chicago Fire.

Fifth

Fifth grade started the second trimester by switching between the classrooms for shared reading, writing and science.  This is a great way to prepare for Glen Crest. The classes are wrapping up their second trimester guided reading novels, which focused on the Holocaust.

LMC

We had a great showing at Literacy night and it kicked off our All School Reading Program. This year we are reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. The students are enjoying following along in their own copy of the book as the teacher reads to the class.

Art

To coincide with the all-school read, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Each grade level is working on creating imaginative artworks. KIndergarteners are creating imaginative monsters with cut paper. First graders are completing a printmaking project before beginning imaginative vehicles. Second graders are working with collage and painted paper to create imaginary animals. To create imaginary bedrooms, third graders are studying mixed-media techniques. Fourth-grade students are learning how to edit their ideas by creating imaginary parks. The fifth graders are studying different printmaking techniques to create an imaginary city.

Music

Kindergarten and 2nd graders have started preparing for their music programs (K - on April 14th, 2nd on March 18th.) 5th graders are working on ukulele ensemble projects and will share with their class in March.

Chorus students are preparing for their next concert, the D89 choral festival on March 12th; this year it’s a ½ day field trip. Students will go to GBS and work with a clinician, then night concert.
